Welcome to the Women 2.0 Canada Community Wiki

Women 2.0 Canada is a network for young women entrepreneurs, providing access to mentorship and resources, both financial and non-financial.

We aim to:

  • increase the number of young women entrepreneurs;
  • encourage women to work with and in the field of technology;
  • provide resources that will lead to the launch of their companies;
  • network women with other female entrepreneurs, experienced executives, and investors; and help young women get access to early stage funding.

Women 2.0 started in Silicon Valley when the founders came together to start a women’s movement in the Web 2.0 frenzy, organizing the first Women 2.0 Conference in April, 2006 and hosting regular networking mixers. Today Women 2.0 has grown to include chapters in Toronto and Ottawa.

We are:

Monika Surma

ottawa [at] women2 [dot] ca

is inherently 2.0 because she likes computers as much as she likes people and gets very excited when the two can come together in one place. Monika tries to infuse a technology angle to all parts of her life, and now officially gets paid to do it for a living, providing strategic advice through her job at DFAIT on the potential for export opportunities in the communications and technology sectors. Monika’s background is a mashup of law, technology and policy with a healthy dose of “if you build it, they will come”. She loves meeting new people and will ask you where you’re really from only to see if your Polish-sounding name could be that of a relative. She lives in Wellington Village in Ottawa surrounded by bike paths, civil servants and ex-Nortelers. - Ottawa

Melany Gallant

ottawa [at] women2 [dot] ca

is inherently 2.0 because she is deeply interested in how technology can help people connect with one another and “do things” more efficiently. Melany’s PR background has provided her the opportunity to work in a variety of industry sectors, high tech being her favourite. Currently the Director of Marketing for Ramius Corporation, Melany helps the company market its online community product and expertise to the world at large. She has supported the Ottawa high tech community through her involvement with the Ottawa BarCamp events and is excited to share her passion for technology with other like-minded women through Women 2.0. Melany lives in Ottawa and strives to master gardening and knitting one of these days. - Ottawa

Ana Gervasio

toronto [at] women2 [dot] ca

is inherently 2.0 because she fears nothing (except insects), has a history of bossing around bosses, and a truly formidable sense of Can-Do. Ana has undauntedly manned the helm of her own business through both smooth and choppy waters despite repeated offers of salaried positions (with benefits). She lives Uptown, Toronto, with her 2 Apple Computers, 5 Moleskines, and a infinite number of brightly coloured shoes. - Toronto

Beverly Crandon

toronto [at] women2 [dot] ca

is inherently 2.0 because she fearlessly gave “it” all up to work for (and find) herself, makes conscious decisions to choose personal gain over financial, and can cook a seriously mean couscous with curried shrimp infused with coconut sauce. In the spirit of improving the norm while keeping the customer foremost in mind, Beverly is the founder of ‘ad-ition,’ helping media moguls re-build and attain their customer base online. She lives in downtown Toronto, with her very fabulous rooftop patio. - Toronto
